That depends on who you ask and what variables you are comparing...

Generally pure mathematicians are more strict with the characterization of maths, and applied mathematicians ignore what cannot be put to use in the real world. That reflects in maths in a way that Pure maths seem more abstract and Applied maths seem less trustful.

Of course both of them have their merits, but I lean more towards pure maths as I feel it somehow as an art.
